ART AND ARCHITECTURE:
HOW CREATIVE EXPRESSION SHAPES OUR PROPERTIES/ARTISTIC FUSION: BLENDING CULTURE AND CREATIVITY IN URBAN SPACES
Art and artistic expressions can be argued to be as old as the dawn of time. Coming from the biblical aspect of the creation story, the earth being without form and void was also an artistic expression (abstract art). This is why it’s no surprise that at every turn, people, spaces and monuments represent many facets of art.
Coming to architecture, the human mind is so creative that millions of architectural designs have poured out over centuries. When you look at the multiple wonders of the old and modern world, one thing always stands out; Each wonder is so unique, so creatively crafted and infused with the culture of the makers. There is no way you will see a Pyramid of Giza and mistake it to belong to people outside of the Egyptians. There is no way you will walk into a Shaolin temple or stand atop The Great Wall, and not immediately peg it to the Chinese. The Mayan ruins to the Mayans, the Great wall of Benin to the Benin’s and by extension, Nigerians.
Now when we come to modern times, I know we’ve had that thought that it has become even more tricky to tell what cultural infusion has been applied in our urban world, since a lot of structures look “one and the same”, and are following similar patterns and rule books. Truly, life after colonialism has made people, practices, cultures and even structures, different. But there is still always a way to tell. The truth is, as long as there is life, there will always be culture, and as long as there is culture, culture will find its way into our architectural spaces and urban communities. You’d see that in statues and monuments strategically positioned in different areas of a community. You could also see that in various artistic home décor littered through a person’s home.
When you walk into a modern home, there is always going to be a form of cultural expression that tells you about their tastes, preferences, and also their ethnicity. We have seen a rise in young Nigerians wanting their spaces to truly show off their culture and a major way they do this is by purchasing valuable African artworks. Platforms like Artsplit have been pivotal in making this desire more accessible and achievable. Artsplit is an art technology platform that enables you to own and earn from fractions of valuable African artworks and music. By doing so, you are not only fostering creative, cultural expression, but are also helping to popularize the beauty and uniqueness, that is African Artists and African Art on a global scale.
The home is not the only place African art and culture had been infused with. Commercial service centers and hospitality establishments like Boardroom Apartments are well known for this. Not only does showcasing our art in these spaces, act as a reminder to revel in our heritage and unique style. It also serves as a canvas upon which our true identity can be showcased to the rest of the world.
So as you go, remember that at your core, your heritage is the name of your identity. Be proud of it, show it off and infuse it in your spaces. You've got this!
